SCHOOLS & YOUTH PROGRAMMES

Foday & Mariama have enjoyed bringing African culture to the youth of their region introducing them to African music & artistic expression. They have worked with pre-schoolers to year 12 students.
Lakes Entrance Primary School as Artists in Residence Foday & Mariama made drums for all the children & teachers (from recycled products supplied & decorated by the students) they taught movement, 2 songs: Ceesay Youngo protection for children & Barbulay no obstacle is too big when it comes to achieving your goals. After 6 weeks/ 2 days a week and 1 school rehearsal, our time as Artists in Residence ended when the children performing for family and friends at morning assembly with 4 Ceesay Youngo muskrats leading the dance.

St Josephs Catholic Primary Schoool Wonthagg Artists in Residence as a result of the school being successful in receiving a grant Artist in School Programme Vic Arts. The preps, 1s & 2s learned to drum and sing, they painted and decorated their drums and made theircostumes.
The 3s & 4s danced around a mango tree, singing a song about how in the night, the grandmothers light a fire, and the children sit on the ground, and listen to stories full of wisdom and guidance within their culture. The 5s & 6s through drama, told the story of a boy, who went into shock after seeing a lion, and the African steps taken by his friends and family toward his recovery followed by a village celebration where these students also played accompaniment and bass drums. The African Adventure ended in an evening performance infront of family & friends approx. 600 people. References available on request.
Blackwood Youth Foundation Drouin after successfully receiving a grant from the Prime Minister Dept., the school asked Foday & Mariama to set up & establish a drumming programme for their students based on research that drumming stimulated R brain & L brain activity. They also made & supplied the school with drums for their project. References available on request.
Bass Coast Childrens Centre Wonthaggi Foday & Mariama had the pleasure running a workshop with the pre-schoolers, and later returning to make the children drums from recycled products leaving the children with the important task of decorating their drums.

South Gippsland Music Camp Leongatha Secondary College Foday & Mariama taught a master class in drumming and assisted in the co-ordination of the final performance with all students. Mariama taught singing & movement. Foday worked with the musicians: brass, kit drum, djembe, guitar, balafon (xylophone) etc.
FREEZA Workshop in drumming, dancing and singing with the children at Erica and surrounding town.
Workshop with Ethiopian children & their families drumming and drama, singing and dancing.
Foday & Mariama have also gone on camps teaching various aspect of African culture eg. Surf Camp Philip Island - Kilmany care etc.
